The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is only getting better with time. Although it is now four years after the initial release, it is still one of the more wonderful open-world games ever. 2015 saw the release of one of the best action role-playing games ever seen. Developed and published by CD Projekt, this is the third installment of the game series, and the sequel to the 2011 game, Witcher II.
Development of this game started in 2011, lasted three and a half years, and it was certainly worth the wait. It has seen release for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. There are also plans that there will be a release of the game on Nintendo Switch on October 2019. Based on the series of novels written by Andrzej Sapkoski, this is a single-player open-world, a third-person perspective game where you control the protagonist, Geralt of Rivia.

CD Projekt even developed their own game engine, REDengine 3. Designed solely for the use on a 64-bit software platform and to create open-world games. Although we could go into the physics of REDengine 3 more than this, all you really need to know is that it has vast improvements from REDengine 2. They include flexible, volumetric rendering and high-resolution support for better mapping and textures.
Wild Hunt has been critically acclaimed, with an excellent accolade for its world design, combat, visuals, narrative, and gameplay. It has also received multiple awards for Game of the Year. Not only has it won Game of the Year honors multiple times, but it has also sold over twenty million copies so far. With four million of them in the first two weeks!
Game-play in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Control Geralt of Rivia, or the monster that is known as the Witcher, and his variety of weapons to change the world in one of thirty-six possible finales. The controls of Geralt have improved in this installment of the series too. He has always been able to walk, run, dodge, and roll; however, for the first time, he can now swim, jump, and climb.
The variety of weapons is extending too! Use bombs, a crossbow, and swords to kill the enemies. There are two varieties of swords that you can use, and they both serve slightly different purposes. There is a silver sword for slaying creatures and monsters, and a steel sword for humans.
Unlike The Witcher II, this installment in the series invites you to create your own path into the unknown. However, there is still an amazing main storyline to follow. Wild Hunt goes as deep into RPG mechanics as the other two games in the series. However, the new REDengine 3 has enabled the creation of a much more rebelliously expansive open-world environment for you to explore.
Not only has the REDengine 3 completed that remarkably, but it has also allowed for a day and night cycle, and powerful weather system. All of those things put together is undoubtedly why this game has had so much hype over the years.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Travel vast expanses of the open-world map while you are on a huge quest to find your long-lost lover, Yennifer, and surrogate daughter, Ciri. Travel off the main storyline to find even more intrigue and excitement. I almost think that the optional side of this game offers more to it that the main storyline. Complete side quests, get deeply involved in underground turf wars, love triangles and assassination plots all while saving the main story till later.
However, be aware of your actions, as none of them will go unnoticed in this game. You will often find morality meters and the like, with specific opportunities to change your persona from good to bad, or vice-versa. However, in The Witcher 3, there is no choice moments or times that you need to make decisions. All of everything you do will go towards choosing which of the thirty-six variations of ending you will see.
Wild Hunt
As you would expect from a new physics engine, the Witcher 3 has had dramatic improvements in almost every aspect when compared to the previous two games in the franchise. Restocking, potion and oil use are much more practical. However, given the nature of the game with such an expanse of the map to explore, it would be unreasonable to have it differently. Not only is the use of them easier and less time consuming, but you will also find a more vast array of them to use, with benefits such as:
- Heightened, mounted combat abilities.
- Health restoration.
- Wide variety of weapon upgrades.
However, keep in mind what we have just said about the actions equalling reactions, and cause and effect. No matter what you do, even if you upgrade your weapons in a certain way, it will have an impact. All of that said though, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an amazingly engaging, and mercilessly combative game that outshines all of its predecessors.
