RPG is a game genre where development of the character or sometimes whole group led by player is an important element. In these games expanding the statistics of our character is also crucial, story line is made from many threads, so called quests. Classic RPG games in most cases are based on turn-based combat and their rules are similar to the board role playing games (here good example might be Fallout series), nevertheless essential role has got RPG actions where dynamic combat develops in real time (Gothic). Very interesting and popular subgenre is jRPG with a Final Fantasy series on top. It refers to the style and culture of East Asian countries.
